In Pasangkayu Regency, oil palm has emerged as a central pillar of the local economy. Farmers harvest fresh fruit bunches (FFB) daily with the objective of securing sufficient income to support their families, a goal that is now increasingly achievable.

“On average, farmers in our cooperative group can earn up to IDR 35 million per month,” said Idris Lambang, Head of the Bina Bersama Lestari Farmers Group.

For this 53-year-old farmer, transitioning to oil palm cultivation has resulted in significant socioeconomic transformation. He has observed that income from oil palm plantations can offer economic security for his family, a level of stability previously unattainable.

Prior to leading the oil palm farmers group, Idris worked as a cocoa farmer. He discontinued cocoa cultivation due to the crop’s susceptibility to pests and diseases, high maintenance costs, and volatile market prices.

“There were so many challenges when I was a cocoa farmer, and eventually I decided to switch to oil palm farming. Oil palm offers a clearer market and more certain long-term returns,” he explained.

Alongside his group members, Idris now harvests and sells produce nearly every day. Monthly production ranges from 1,000 to 1,100 tons of FFB, which is sold to PT Letawa, a subsidiary of Astra Agro. This partnership has been maintained for approximately 19 years.

This partnership has resulted in substantial improvements. Previously, farmers faced difficulties in marketing their harvests due to limited cultivation knowledge and suboptimal fruit quality. Currently, with ongoing support from the cooperative and the company, market access is more accessible and organized.

“We have experienced so many benefits. We regularly receive training and assistance to improve the quality of our harvests,” Idris said.

The assistance provided extends beyond theoretical instruction. Farmers receive direct field guidance in areas such as proper fertilization methods, efficient harvesting techniques, and sustainable plantation management. Additionally, online training sessions are conducted to facilitate ongoing knowledge and skill development.

This initiative has been further reinforced by a recent collaboration between Astra Agro and the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), which organized training programs for independent oil palm smallholders in Pasangkayu, West Sulawesi. The program aims to improve technical skills and enhance farmers’ understanding of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), with a focus on efficiency and sustainability in plantation management.

During the training conducted in Palu on 28–29 April 2026, farmers were encouraged to implement cultivation practices that are more effective, productive, and environmentally sustainable.

Idris was among the direct beneficiaries of the program. He reported an improved understanding of oil palm plantation management, from initial planting to routine maintenance, which enables farmers to optimize harvest yields.

“Training programs like this are one of the key factors supporting us in becoming more capable and higher-quality oil palm farmers,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a written statement, CPOPC Director of Sustainability and Smallholders, Antonius Yudi, emphasized that farmers play a strategic role in the global supply chain, making smallholder capacity-building essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the palm oil industry.

“We hope this activity will enhance technical skills while also strengthening participants’ understanding of the importance of efficiency and sustainability in plantation management,” he stated.

Appreciation also came from Pasangkayu Regency Head of Plantation and Agriculture Office, Abidin, who attended the event. According to him, strengthening farmers’ capacity through the implementation of good cultivation practices is key to improving productivity, efficiency, and the competitiveness of local farmers.

Desi has been attending university for nearly 3 years, dedicating her time to her academic responsibilities. She is enrolled in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (Civics Education/PPKN) at Universitas Jambi, located in Muaro Bulian, Muaro Jambi Regency, approximately 15 kilometres from central Jambi city. She selected this major with the goal of advancing her community by teaching SAD children literacy skills.

“I am proud to be born as a part of SAD Community, but our lives are difficult because not all of us are aware of the importance of education. At my age, many choose to get married rather than continue schooling,” said Desi.

Desi, the eldest daughter of Munawir and Indra Wati, moved to Jambi to pursue higher education. As the first of four children, she is motivated to continue her studies to improve her family’s living conditions and support her siblings.

Although many children from the SAD community in her village have started pursuing education, few remain committed to continuing to higher education as she has.

“I don’t mind living far from my family because I want to make my parents proud. I want to keep studying so I can achieve my dreams and become a role model for my younger siblings,” she added.

Desi also expressed her aspiration to surpass her parents’ educational attainment, as they were only able to complete elementary school.

The Suku Anak Dalam (SAD), also known as Orang Rimba, are an indigenous people residing on the island of Sumatra, particularly in Jambi and South Sumatra provinces. Traditionally, they have led a nomadic lifestyle, relying on hunting and gathering forest products. In recent years, many have chosen to leave the forest, settle in permanent areas, and integrate with surrounding communities.

Kurnia’s experience demonstrates similar determination. At 20 years old, she continues to pursue her childhood ambition of becoming a healthcare worker. It is uncommon for members of the Orang Rimba community to continue their education at public higher education institutions in Jambi.

Kurnia and her extended family, members of the SAD community, originate from Bukit Suban Village, Air Hitam District, Sarolangun Regency, Jambi. Despite limited access to urban educational resources, as the second of four siblings, she remained hopeful and motivated.

She developed confidence through adaptation and active social engagement. Despite originating from a remote village, she successfully adjusted to university life in the city and interacted with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

However, she frequently encountered doubt, particularly when some community members and peers questioned her aspirations, leading to periods of discouragement and consideration of abandoning her goals.

“When I said I got accepted into the health faculty, I cried. Some people came not to support me but to make me doubt myself. At that time, I really didn’t know what to do, especially because of the cost of living in the city,” Kurnia recalled.

Ultimately, both Desi and Kurnia realized their ambitions and successfully enrolled in university with substantial support.

“All my school and university expenses—even my allowance and daily needs while living away from home—were covered by PT SAL,” Kurnia said.

“It’s not just about school and university—our parents were also supported by PT SAL to help provide for our younger siblings,” Desi added.

“The residents and children who come to the posyandu feel like family to us cadres. We know them, understand their needs, and act as a bridge between the community and healthcare services. That’s what makes this work so meaningful,” Iin said emotionally.Posyandu cadres supported by Astra Agro are at the forefront of community-based healthcare. In 2025, 2,098 cadres actively supported posyandu operations in villages near the company’s operational areas.

The support provided goes beyond facilities, extending to strengthening service systems through the implementation of the Five-Table System, the provision of supplementary nutrition for infants, toddlers, pregnant women, and the elderly, and regular training and incentives for cadres.

The company’s Emergency Response Preparedness Team (TKTD) provided practical training on fire risk identification, initial response techniques, and the use of basic firefighting equipment.

Participants received both theoretical instruction and hands-on fire suppression training using burlap sacks, portable fire extinguishers (APAR), and company firefighting units. This approach aims to improve understanding and practical emergency preparedness.

Tri Budi J, Fire Protection PIC at PT GSDI, stated that this initiative demonstrates the company’s responsibility to ensure environmental safety in nearby areas.

“We want the company’s presence to extend beyond operations by making tangible contributions to community preparedness. Basic knowledge, such as wind direction, safe distance, and evacuation procedures, is essential to minimizing fire risks,” he stated.

He added that this activity is part of the company’s integrated fire prevention system, which includes regular hotspot monitoring, joint patrols, facility readiness, and routine emergency response training.
